On June 19, 2014, he received the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military honor, for his extraordinary bravery in Afghanistan.
A Defining Moment
On November 21, 2010, Carpenter and his squad were ambushed by Taliban insurgents. As bullets flew, a hand grenade landed near his fellow Marine, Nick Eufrasio. Without hesitation, Carpenter threw himself on the grenade, absorbing the blast with his own body and saving Eufrasio's life.
