California's First Earthquake Warning System Now Available to the Public
Groundbreaking Technology Provides Early Notice of Seismic Activity
26 Earthquakes of Magnitude 1.5 or Greater Recorded in Past 24 Hours
In a groundbreaking move, California has launched the country's first publicly available earthquake warning system. The system, which has been in development for years, provides residents with precious seconds to take cover before an earthquake strikes.
According to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), California has experienced 26 earthquakes of magnitude 1.5 or greater in the past 24 hours. This is a significant increase from the average number of earthquakes of this magnitude recorded per day over the past year.
The new warning system, known as the California Earthquake Warning System (CEWS), uses a network of sensors to detect seismic activity and provide early warnings to residents. The system is designed to provide up to 60 seconds of warning before an earthquake strikes.
