Hamilton storms to pole in Hungary

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton charged to his first pole position since the closing stages of the 2021 season with a scintillating lap in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Hamilton beat Red Bull's Max Verstappen by 0.734 seconds to take his first pole of the 2023 campaign and the 109th of his career.

It was a dramatic qualifying session, with several drivers crashing out, including Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and McLaren's Lando Norris.

Hamilton's pole position was a major boost for Mercedes, who have struggled for pace so far this season.

It also puts Hamilton in a strong position to challenge for victory in Sunday's race.
