Cucurella Hand

UEFA Satisfied With Anthony Taylor's Decision in Germany vs. Spain Euro 2024 Match

Contentious Call Backed by VAR

One of the most contentious issues from Friday's Euro 2024 quarter-final between Spain and Germany, which La Roja won 2-1 after extra time, was a possible handball by Spanish star Marc Cucurella.

Referee Antony Taylor's decision not to award a penalty was backed by the designated VAR.

With just minutes remaining in regulation time and the score tied at 1-1, a Jamal Musiala shot hit the arm of Cucurella.

The incident left Germany incredulous, but UEFA has since backed Taylor's decision.

"UEFA is satisfied with the decision of the referee and the VAR team not to award a penalty to Germany during their 2-1 quarter-final defeat by Spain on Friday," a UEFA spokesperson said.

"The ball struck the arm of Cucurella in a natural position, and the referee and VAR correctly judged that there was no deliberate handball."

Germany coach Hansi Flick was critical of the decision after the match, but Taylor's interpretation of the handball rule is in line with FIFA's guidelines.

Under FIFA's handball rule, a penalty is only awarded if a player deliberately handles the ball. In this case, the VAR determined that Cucurella did not intentionally handle the ball.
