Cinco de Mayo: A Celebration of Mexican Victory

A Historical Commemoration

Cinco de Mayo translates to "fifth of May" in Spanish and commemorates the Mexican army's victory over France at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. This holiday celebrates the date of this significant victory during the Franco-Mexican War.

The Battle of Puebla

The Battle of Puebla took place more than 50 years after Mexico's independence from Spain. French Emperor Napoleon III wanted to claim Mexico for himself. On May 5, 1862, a French army attacked the town of Puebla, just southeast of Mexico City.

Despite being outnumbered, the Mexican army, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, fought valiantly and repelled the French attack. This victory became a symbol of Mexican resilience and determination.
