Jontay Porter Banned from NBA for Gambling-Related Violations
NBA Investigation Reveals Betting and Information Sharing
Raptors Forward Faces Lifetime Ban
The National Basketball Association (NBA) has banned Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter for life following an investigation that found he disclosed confidential information to sports gamblers and bet on games.
The 24-year-old Porter, who played collegiately at the University of Missouri, was initially suspended by the NBA in February 2023 after the league opened an investigation into his activities. The investigation found that Porter had violated the NBA's gambling policies by placing bets on games involving his team and by sharing confidential information about the Raptors with a known sports gambler.
This is a serious violation of NBA rules and a betrayal of the trust placed in our players," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "We will not tolerate this type of behavior in our league."
Porter's lifetime ban is the latest in a series of high-profile gambling scandals to hit the NBA. In 2021, former referee Tim Donaghy was sentenced to 15 months in prison for his role in a gambling scheme involving the fixing of NBA games.
